Digital citizenship is something that must be taught from the moment students are given the opportunity to use technology. Students must understand what their role is when using technology. This infographic does a wonderful job of explaining the importance of understanding digital law. Students have a world of knowledge at their fingertips and find it very easy to copy and paste the information they have found, without any regard to the person that supplied the information in the first place. I liked this infographic because it asks the questions students are asking and then gives them an answer to the question in a funny and relevant way. If I were teaching Jr. High or Highschool students I would have this up in my classroom.
I hadn't actually heard the term "Flipped Classroom" until starting in this program. I was intrigued to find out what the excitement was all about. When hearing a little bit about it my immediate thought was how can that work in my 2nd grade classroom. I feel that with younger grades parent support is a must in getting the kids to follow through with the watching of videos. After doing the reading I am more open about it, although I still feel it is more of a challenge for lower elementary teachers to flip their classroom then upper elementary and Jr/Sr. High classes.
I like what "The Flipped Class Manifest" stated about what a flipped classroom should look like. I like the idea of intentional and active transfer of information being done at home, so that students have more time in class to work on the concepts with fellow classmates. The teacher is then there as an active guide in there learning journey. I look forward to trying to step out of my comfort zone and trying a few flipped lessons in my class. Teaching digital citizenship to students is a necessary endeavor in the world of education. Looking over the list of lessons I chose Lesson 4: Online Reputation and Cyber-bullying.
The lesson objectives are to appreciate potential short-term and long-term consequences of irresponsible social networking. As well as understand what cyber-bullying is and its effects. Students will also learn about what they want their online reputation to be and how to treat others on the internet. This lesson should take about 45 minutes to teach. You will need a projector and the correct videos loaded for this lesson. I chose this lesson because I have seen the effects of cyber-bullying with my extending family. Students need to understand that their written words are influential and you can make or break someone by what is written about them. Although this lesson is for older students, I feel that it is important to teach even to elementary students. I would love to take the idea of this lesson and make it more user friendly for my 2nd grade classroom. A PLN short for personal learning network, consists of a group of people that a learner will interact with to attain knowledge for personal growth. A PLN enables a learner to branch out and derive knowledge in ways were not at our fingertips in previous years. It opens up new avenues and paths that one can journey on, in their learning adventures. The people that I have included in my PLN are colleagues from different walks of life. I have also included former teachers as well as current classmates. I have also included a few different elementary teachers that I have found searching for great ideas to implement in my class. I feel that by using a PLN it will enable me to grow professionally and give me better tools to engage my students in their education journey. The #EdChat that I participated in was on Tuesday, November 24th at 4:00 pm. The topic covered was: What are specific ways in which educators can support the idea that students should have a voice in their education? I found the topic interesting. Although the chat was hard to follow because of how fast paced it was, I found the topic interesting. During the chat I mostly lurked, however I did make a couple of comments and also had a couple responses to my comments. My experience was overall good and I could see myself joining in more chats. I feel that this could be a great place to get ideas from educators all over the country. I have been using Pinterest even before having my own classroom. I started using it for baking & cooking recipe's. Once I started in the classroom I would go on pinterest to search for great ideas to use in my classroom. I have recently added the Ed Tech Tools board because I wanted to have a common place for all of my teaching ideas. Utilizing pinterest has given me so wonderful strategies for my lessons and I will continue to use it not only for fun and creative lesson ideas, but also to help me better include technology in my classroom.
This video and Sir Ken's ideas really made me stop and think about how I teach in my classroom. I hope to be a teacher that helps students to continue to be divergent thinkers. One way that I would like to do a better job of this is by using more differentiated lessons. I understand the importance of tapping into the strengths of each student individually, however until the entire education system has a paradigm shift we still have to conform to what is expected (i.e. test scores).
I agree with his idea about ADHD not being the epidemic that many educators believe it is. I feel that many teachers, in the frustration of trying to teach a completely new generation of students, are at a loss when it comes to grabbing and holding their attention. Teachers fall into the trap of this child needs help in focusing, when really we as educators need to find a way to bring excitement into what they are learning. I am not one that supports medicating students just for the point of helping them to focus. I have witnessed the bad side effects of this road and do not believe it is the "go to" answer for children that are having "focusing" issues. I really enjoyed this video and look forward to watching some of his other videos. |
